Baltimore's Vibes, 7 Days a Week

Fort McHenry opens Defenders' Day this morning with a flag change dedicated to Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Twenty-five years on, and Baltimore's oldest holiday — celebrated since 1815 — begins on that date. Go stand on the ramparts at 10 AM if you can.

Then the weekend detonates. Brandon Woody brings a sixteen-piece big band into the Current Space garden. Kenny Garrett opens a two-night run at Keystone. Charles Wesley Godwin plays the water. Oysters take over Broadway Square, live racing returns to Laurel, and there are four separate improv shows at Highwire alone. 32 verified events — you will not run out.

⭐ Our Bonus Pick

Defenders' Day Opening Day @ Fort McHenry National Monument

10 AM–8:30 PM · $15 adults, free under 16 · 2400 E. Fort Ave., Locust Point

Baltimore has been observing Defenders' Day since 1815, which makes it the oldest holiday in the city and older than most of the country's. It marks the September 1814 defense of Baltimore against the British fleet and the anthem Francis Scott Key wrote watching it happen.

This year's opening day falls on September 11, and the Park Service has built for it. The 10 AM morning flag change is dedicated to Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance — you can help rangers and the Fort McHenry Guard raise the Star-Spangled Banner over the ramparts yourself. At 11:15, a 45-minute walking program called American Anthem: 250 Years at the Home of the Brave traces the fort's history of service from the Revolution to now. Evening flag change at 4. Then at 7 PM the rangers and the fifes and drums march out of the fort and parade through Locust Point to open the weekend.

Saturday brings the artillery demonstrations, the Maryland Military Band, and fireworks at 8:01 PM. But today is the one with weight to it. Fees stop being collected at 4 PM, parking is free and limited, and the water taxi drops at the park.

That's a Wrap!

32 verified events, a sixteen-piece band in a garden, an NEA Jazz Master playing two sets, and a 211-year-old holiday opening at the fort. Saturday is somehow bigger. Until then: yodel it from the rooftops. 🗣️⛰️
