This is the kind of thing that sounds like a museum press release until you actually think about it: the Walters is putting on public view a 12th-century manuscript that Franciscans worldwide believe St. Francis of Assisi himself touched and used. People make pilgrimages to Baltimore just to stand near it. The exhibition marks the 800th anniversary of Francis's death and pairs the Missal with more than a dozen other objects — manuscripts, paintings, glass, ivory, ceramics — that explain why a single beat-up prayer book carries this much weight, plus details on the two-year conservation effort that saved it. It runs through February 7, but today's the opening, it's free, and it's a five-minute reason to feel something bigger than a Wednesday.
